Bottom and the other workmen gathered in the wood. Titania slept nearby. Quince chose the green plot as their stage. They would rehearse Pyramus and Thisbe for the Duke.
Bottom worried that Pyramus killing himself would frighten the ladies. He did not want to remove the scene. He proposed a prologue explaining that the violence was pretend. It would also say that Bottom the weaver played Pyramus.
Snout and Starveling feared the lion would frighten the ladies. Bottom agreed that a roaring lion could be alarming. He suggested that Snug show his face through the lion's neck. Snug would speak and assure the audience that he was a man.
Quince wondered how to show moonlight in an indoor chamber. The lovers met by moonlight. Bottom suggested leaving a window open or using a lantern. Quince also needed a way to show the wall between the lovers.
Puck watched the clowns rehearsing near the sleeping queen. He considered joining their performance. Quince corrected their lines and cues. Thisbe was speaking her whole part too early.
Puck returned with Bottom wearing an ass's head. The frightened clowns ran away. Puck followed them through the wood. He would change into animals to frighten them further.
Bottom stayed where he was and began to sing. He thought the others were trying to frighten him. Titania woke and listened to his voice. She was enchanted by his voice and appearance and declared her love.
Titania told Bottom to stay with her and called fairies to care for him. She offered jewels and feared the moon wept for forced love. Bottom greeted the tiny fairies as masters and asked about their relatives. Titania ordered them to bring him silently to her bower.
